Chola Kulcha

Chola Kulcha (pronunciation: Ch-oh-La [‘La’ as in ‘la’rge] and Kull-cha [‘ch’ as in chat]) is one of the most famous and widely sold food items available on the streets of Delhi. Chola Kulcha is basically Chola (type of pulse) eaten with Kulcha (a type of bread).  It is similar to the orthodox and well know Indian food item Roti (Indian Bread) and Sabji (Vegetable). The Chola is first boiled  enough to make it soft  and then mixed with a number of spices like chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt, garam masala etc. and then sprinkled with finely peeled onions. The Chola is served hot with three or four slices of kulcha. At times, finely cut fresh green chilly is also mixed in with the chola. This can further increase the spiciness of the item.

The combination is very tasty indeed and the price is simply unbelievable. A normal plate of chola kulcha comes with one bowl of chola and two to four slices of kulcha depending upon the size of the kulcha. It is just enough for one person. The price is somewhere around 15-20 Indian rupees.  (That would be around 40 US cents). Chola Kulcha is enjoyed by everyone though the regular customers include students and general office workers. Being so cheap in price, the item is popular with labourers and other workers of the same class too.

I would recommend you to go and have a bite at almost any of the Chola Kulcha stalls or shops you come across. Treat yourself with this incredibly cheap and refreshing food item.  There aren’t any popular shops or points for eating Chola Kulcha as the taste is somewhat invariable. But if you do come across some extraordinary Chola Kulcha shop then you are more than welcome to post here.
